Baby Girl Born with 28 Digits in Phulbari

A baby girl has been born in Phulbari, Dinajpur, with a total of 28 digits across her hands and feet. In medical science, this congenital physical trait is known as "polydactyly." Her family is concerned about her medical care, as the infant has congenital defects affecting her lips and palate in addition to the extra digits.

The baby was born on September 13 to the couple Asadul Islam Arif and Liza Akter from Dadpur Malipara village in Shibnagar Union, Phulbari Upazila, Dinajpur.

Delivered via surgery at a private clinic in Phulbari town, the infant had seven digits on each hand and each foot, totaling 28. The family reported that each digit had a nail.

According to the family, an extra digit on the baby's left hand fell off two days after birth.

Crowds Gather to See the Newborn

News of the baby's birth has sparked widespread curiosity in the area. Local residents are visiting the family's home daily to catch a glimpse of the newborn.

However, amidst this public curiosity, the parents are worried about the baby's future medical treatment.

The baby's father, Asadul Islam Arif, works as a van driver. He is anxious about how he will manage his daughter's medical expenses while supporting the family on a limited income.

This is their first child.

Congenital Defects in Lips and Palate

In addition to the extra digits, the baby has congenital defects affecting her lips and palate. The attending physician indicated that surgery might be required in the future to address these issues.

Dr. M.A.N. Nurul Islam Chowdhury, the physician who performed Liza Akter's delivery, stated that the extra digits are not currently causing any major physical complications for the baby.

However, surgery may be necessary later to correct the congenital defects of the lips and palate.

What is Polydactyly?

Dr. S.K. Sadek Ali, Principal of Dinajpur Medical College and a pediatrician, identified the condition of having extra digits as "polydactyly" in medical terms. Polydactyly is a congenital physical condition in which a child may have extra fingers or toes beyond the usual number.

According to doctors, the child should undergo necessary examinations by specialists to determine if there are any other underlying congenital complications.

The child's father stated that he supports the family on the limited income earned from driving a van; bearing the substantial cost of treating his daughter's cleft lip and palate would be difficult for him.

Nevertheless, he has expressed his determination to do everything within his means to help his daughter recover.

The child's paternal grandparents, Amjad Hossain and Ayesha Akter, have also expressed concern regarding their granddaughter's future and medical treatment.
