Born in Prison, 7-Year-Old Mobashera Steps into Freedom Holding Her Mother's Hand

Little Mobashera spent the first seven years of her life within the four walls of a prison. On Tuesday (September 15), after her mother, Kamrunnahar Moni, was acquitted in the Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder case, the child stepped into the free world for the first time, holding her mother's hand as they left Kashimpur Women's Central Jail.
Kamrunnahar Moni was seven months pregnant when she was arrested in 2019. Mobashera was born inside the prison, and the child grew up there alongside her mother.
Upon her release, Moni became emotional while speaking about her daughter's seven years of prison life. She said, "My child was born in prison and spent seven years there. Inside, I taught her from second-grade textbooks, helped her memorize a *para* (section) of the Quran, and taught her how to read the Quran."
Even within the confined environment of the prison, she tried to give her daughter an idea of a normal life. Moni said, "I cut up a garment to make her a schoolbag. She used to go to 'school' carrying three books. She didn't even know what a real schoolbag was like."
Moni also explained why she kept her daughter with her in prison. She said, "If I had sent her outside, she wouldn't have been happy. A child is never happy without their mother. No one else cares for a child the way a mother does; a mother is like a protective cloak."
Relatives waiting outside the prison welcomed the mother and daughter with flowers. The sight of Mobashera stepping into a life of freedom, holding her mother's hand after seven long years, moved many of those present to tears.
