There have been allegations of extortion of money over the handover of bodies at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (Shebachim) Hospital in Barisal. Relatives claim that some people on duty at the morgue and morgue delay the release of the bodies on various pretexts and demand money.
Relatives of a recently deceased child complained that they were made to wait for hours to receive the body. Later, tension arose over the issue when money was demanded. Several other victims have also made similar complaints.
Hospital sources say that the accused are not permanent employees of the hospital. However, they have been involved in morgue-related work for a long time. It is alleged that money is taken from relatives in the name of bringing and receiving bodies and other services.
Although one of the accused denied taking money regarding the complaint, the hospital authorities said that a complaint has been received regarding the matter and legal action will be taken if such incidents occur in the future.
Locals demand that immediate and effective steps be taken to stop any kind of irregularities or harassment regarding the body.
