Tragic accident late at night - 3 people including a Navy member died after a bus hit a parked truck

Three people including a Navy member were killed in a horrific road accident late at night in Mirsarai upazila of Chittagong. At least eight more passengers were injured in the incident, some of whom are said to be in critical condition. Traffic was disrupted for some time on that section of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway after the accident.
The accident occurred on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the Dhumghat Forest Office area of Bariyarhat Municipality in Mirsarai upazila at around 2 am on Thursday (January 8). Police and eyewitnesses said that the speeding passenger bus hit the back of a truck loaded with wood standing on the highway.
Among the deceased is Nafiz Ahmed Ayan (18), son of Nur Alam of Masjidiya area of Mirsarai upazila, who was a member of the Bangladesh Navy. The other deceased are Md. Helal's daughter Chabitun Nahar (25) of Chandgaon police station in Chittagong city and Mintu Mia (45) son of the deceased Naya Bepari of Fulchhari police station in Gaibandha.
Police and fire service officials said that a truck loaded with trees was standing in the Dhaka-bound lane of the highway in the dark of night. At that time, a double-decker sleeper bus of St. Martin Travels lost control in the same lane and hit the back of the truck. As a result of the collision, the bus twisted and twisted and the passengers inside were thrown out and seriously injured.
Fire service and police members quickly reached the spot after receiving information about the accident and started rescue work. The injured were rescued and taken to Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared three of them dead. The other injured passengers are being treated at various hospitals.
Borhan Uddin, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Jorarganj Highway Police Station, said that several others were injured in the accident and their treatment is underway. The bus and truck involved in the accident have been recovered and taken into police custody. The truck driver fled after the incident, he said. The bodies of the deceased will be handed over to their families after completing the legal process.
The accident has cast a shadow of mourning over the area. Locals have demanded stricter surveillance and measures to stop risky activities like parking vehicles on the highway.
