At least four people were killed in a clash between armed groups of two political parties of the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Dighinala, Khagrachari. The deceased were members of the UPDF (pro-prosit) military wing, 'Ganmukti Fauj' or 'People's Liberation Army', police said.
The firing took place at around 8:30 pm on Friday (July 25) in the Jora Sindhu Karbaripara area of Dighinala. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dighinala Police Station Md. Zakaria confirmed the matter.
According to police sources, a group of 40-45 people led by armed commander Biplob Chakma of the UPDF (Prosit) party and another group of 35-40 people led by armed commander Joydev Chakma of the JSS party led by Santu Larma faced off. Later, a fierce exchange of fire took place between the two sides.
OC Zakaria said, “We are going to the spot after receiving the information about the bullets. Initially, it has been learned that four members of the military wing of UPDF (Prosit) have been killed. Several others have been injured. The identities of the deceased have not been confirmed yet.”
He also said that the law and order situation at the spot is currently under control. Panic has spread among the locals.
It is worth noting that the conflict between political hegemony and organizations in the Chittagong Hill Tracts has been going on for a long time. Such clashes occasionally occur. However, such deadly clashes do not usually result in multiple fatalities.
