Raid on Padma in Shivchar, 20 thousand meters net seized, 5 arrested

Four batteries, two controllers, 20 thousand meters of net were seized from the hilsa fishing trawler during a raid in Padma river in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur district.

The Upazila Fisheries Office conducted this operation on Saturday (October 12) from 12:00 pm to Sunday morning at different places of Padma river.

According to sources in the fisheries office, the administration is taking a strict stance to protect mother hilsa. On the first day of the ban, a team of Charjanajat Naval Police and Fisheries Office under the leadership of Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Ferdous Ibn Rahim raided the Padma river. During this time they seized five fishermen along with nets and batteries, controllers and fish. Later the net was burnt and destroyed.
Shibchar Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Ferdous Ibn Rahim said that the operation was conducted from 12:00 pm to 6:00 am on Sunday. The nets and other items were seized along with the arrest of the fishermen. They were sentenced to various terms.
He also said that this campaign will be made stronger than last time. So that no one can catch mother hilsa from Padma river during prohibited time.
