On 10 March 2015, Salahuddin Ahmed disappeared from a house in Uttara, Dhaka. Later, on 11 May, Indian police said he was found in Shillong, Meghalaya. According to a report by The Daily Star, after being arrested in Shillong, he told Meghalaya police that some people identifying themselves as intelligence officials had picked him up from the Uttara house in Dhaka.

A case was filed against him in India for illegal entry. In 2018, he was acquitted in that case, and in 2023, the higher court also allowed him to return to Bangladesh.

However, even after the court’s permission, he remained stranded in India for a long time. A Prothom Alo report stated that even in 2024, many people inside and outside BNP were asking why he could not return to Bangladesh despite being acquitted.

End of His Exile

After staying in India for almost nine years, Salahuddin Ahmed returned to Bangladesh in August 2024. According to a BNP report, he arrived in Dhaka from Delhi and was welcomed by BNP leaders and activists at the airport.

After returning home, he visited the grave of Ziaur Rahman and spoke about building a democratic state. The same report also mentioned that he returned to the country with a travel pass after a change in the political situation.

His Position in BNP

Salahuddin Ahmed is currently a member of BNP’s National Standing Committee. This is the highest policymaking forum of the party. According to the BSS biography, he is working as an important policymaker of BNP.
