Portugal wins via Félix's goal on a night of missed chances for Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo failed to score despite having multiple opportunities. However, a 22nd-minute goal from João Félix secured a 1–0 victory over Wales, launching Portugal's campaign to defend their UEFA Nations League title. It also marked a winning start for Jorge Jesus in his first match as coach.

The hosts took the initiative in attack right from the start in Lisbon on Thursday (September 24). Early in the match, Ronaldo received a pass from Félix but sent his angled shot wide of the post. Later, a low shot from Félix—struck from outside the box—deflected off a Welsh player's foot and found the back of the net.

After the break, Ronaldo squandered another close-range opportunity. He later found the net off a pass from Bruno Fernandes, but the goal was disallowed for offside. None of his seven shots during the match resulted in a goal; Jesus substituted him off in the 67th minute.

Although Portugal took 23 shots, they could not extend their lead. Meanwhile, a Welsh effort rebounded off the crossbar. Ultimately, Félix's goal ensured the reigning champions secured all three points from their opening Nations League match.
