Published: 06:18 31 October 2025
Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, who plays in the United States' Major League Soccer (MLS), has signed a new three-year contract with Inter Miami. Although the previous contract was supposed to end at the end of the 2025 season, the club reached a new contract with Messi before that. With this contract, Messi will once again be the highest-paid player in MLS.
According to the salary list published by the Players Association (MLSPA), Messi will receive 20.45 million US dollars per year in the new contract, which is more than 250 crore 43 lakh taka in Bangladeshi currency. This includes a basic salary, signing bonus and additional income from commercial partnerships.
Messi tops the list of highest-paid players in MLS
South Korean star Son Heung-min is in second place in the annual salary list of MLS players in the 2025 season. After leaving Tottenham Hotspur, he joined the Los Angeles FC team in the United States. Son's annual salary is $11.15 million, which is about 136 crore 54 lakh 37 thousand in Bangladeshi taka.
In third place is Messi's former teammate and Spanish legend Sergio Busquets, who plays for Inter Miami. His annual salary is $8.78 million (about 107 crore 52 lakh in Bangladeshi taka).
Miami team stars gather
Inter Miami currently has several former star footballers in the world. One of them is Jordi Alba, who has made it to the list of the top ten paid players. However, he has announced his retirement from professional football at the end of this season. Similarly, Busquets will also leave at the end of the season.
On the other hand, Argentine midfielder Rodrigo de Paul, who recently joined Inter Miami from Atletico Madrid, has not yet made it to the top ten.
Two more stars in the top five
The other two in the top five of the MLS salary list are –
Miguel Almiron (Atlanta United)
Herving Lozano (San Diego FC)
Both are popular footballers in Latin America and play important roles in the attack of their clubs.
Reasons behind Messi's salary
Messi's popularity in the football world, his ability to attract sponsors and his contribution to Inter Miami's commercial growth – these three factors have played a role in determining the huge salary in the new contract. The club hopes that with Messi's presence, MLS will gain more global popularity and the football market in the United States will expand further.
In short, with this new contract, Lionel Messi has further solidified his position as the most influential star in American football not only on the field, but also financially.
