Skip hybrid model, come to alternative route — ICC to Pakistan

Published: 12:56 29 November 2024
The position of ICC and PCB in the ongoing debate over Pakistan's venue as the host of the 2025 Champions Trophy has taken a rather complicated shape. With Pakistan rejecting the hybrid model and seeking an alternative proposal, three possible directions are currently emerging:
In this model, the entire tournament could be hosted outside Pakistan in a neutral country, such as the United Arab Emirates. Even if PCB is named as the host, PCB could lose complete control over the organization, which could be a financial and diplomatic challenge for them.
All Champions Trophy matches in Pakistan, but India will not participate:
This is an almost impossible option, because without India's participation, the financial aspect of the tournament would be severely affected. Moreover, it is difficult to ensure the commercial success of the tournament without the attraction of the India-Pakistan match.
New model through an agreement between India and Pakistan:
A middle ground could be found by determining an alternative venue for India in the future. However, this will depend on diplomatic agreements.
The political tensions between India and Pakistan are not new to the sporting world. If a bilateral agreement is not reached to host the Champions Trophy, the ICC may have to make a tough decision.
The matter will be clearer if the ICC announces any new decision after today's board meeting. However, the final solution will depend on the approval of the PCB and the Pakistan government.
