A. League's former Minister of Industry and Commerce Tofail Ahmed is no more

Tofail Ahmed is no more (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). The country's senior politician and one of the organizers of the 1969 mass uprising and the Liberation War breathed his last while undergoing treatment at the Square Hospital in the capital on Monday (June 1, 2026) afternoon. He was 82 years old at the time of his death.
Family sources said that he had been suffering from various complications related to old age for a long time. He had been undergoing treatment in the hospital since last September due to pneumonia, heart disease and physical weakness.
Born in Bhola on October 22, 1943, Tofail Ahmed was the VP of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) during his student life. He played an important role in the 1969 mass uprising and later became widely known as an organizer during the Liberation War.
In the 1970 elections, at the age of just 27, he was elected a member of the Pakistan National Assembly. He served as a member of parliament and minister several times in his long political career after independence. His death has cast a shadow of mourning over the political arena.
