A new polarization has emerged in the political arena in Karnaphuli Upazila of Chittagong. As hundreds of leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliates officially joined Jamaat-e-Islami, discussions and curiosity have increased in local politics. Political stakeholders are seeing this joining as an important event to accumulate strength at the grassroots level in view of the upcoming elections.
On Saturday (January 31) evening, the new leaders and activists were welcomed into the party through a meeting organized in the Dwip Kal Morol area of Ward No. 1 of Shikalbaha Union in Karnaphuli Upazila. The joining ceremony was concluded with a floral reception, where a festive atmosphere could be observed.
Mahmudul Hasan Chowdhury, the Jamaat-e-Islami nominated candidate for Chittagong-13 constituency, was present as the chief guest at the event. He welcomed the new leaders and activists to Jamaat by garlanding them and highlighting the organization's ideals and future work plans.
According to party sources, Raju Ahmed, President of Ward No. 1 Sramik Dal of Shikalbaha Union, and Md. Dulal, Joint General Secretary of Jubo Dal of the same ward, led a large number of leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliated organizations to join Jamaat. It is expected that this joining will further consolidate Jamaat's organizational strength in Karnaphuli Upazila.
Explaining the reason for joining, Raju Ahmed said,
"We were associated with the politics of BNP's organ organizations for a long time. Currently, Jamaat's ideals, discipline and activities seem acceptable to us. Today, from the place of ideological politics, we have decided to change the party of more than a hundred leaders and activists."
Karnaphuli Upazila Jamaat Ameer Munir Abshar Chowdhury said, Jamaat-e-Islami is a patriotic and ideal-based political organization. The main goal of the party is to ensure justice, honesty and the welfare of the people in the society. He said that Jamaat wants to build a beautiful and just society by uniting all conscious people.
He also said that a call is being made to build a new society in Chittagong-13 constituency by making Mahmudul Hasan Chowdhury the winner through a 'ballot revolution' on February 12.
Jamaat-e-Islami and its local leaders at various levels were present at the meeting. According to political analysts, this joining can have a significant impact on the electoral equation of the Karnaphuli region and its reflection in local politics will become more clear in the future.
