BNP suspended leader Fazlur Rahman has said that fair elections are not possible under the interim government's chief advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. He alleged that he has nightly contacts with Dr. Yunus' party, the National Citizens Party (NCP), and Jamaat. He claimed, "Practically, Jamaat is now running the country."
He said these things in an exclusive interview given to Dhaka Press on Thursday (August 28). Fazlur Rahman said that Jamaat is controlling important parts of the country's economy, including the banking sector, Islamic banks, and the stock market, and administrative changes are being made at their behest.
At that time, he strongly condemned the arrest of freedom fighter and former minister Latif Siddiqui and said that anti-liberation forces are taking control of the country. He warned the countrymen, "Bangladesh has now become East Pakistan in a nutshell. We must unite with the forces that supported the liberation war."
Fazlur Rahman also said that although his BNP advisory post was temporarily suspended, he still considered himself a part of the BNP.
