The Rahra Police Station has arrested three leaders of the Bangladesh Awami League from different areas of West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on charges of infiltration into India. All of the arrested have claimed to be active workers of the Awami League.
The three arrested are Majnu Gazi (52), Mohammad Kamal Sheikh alias Idris Ali (40) and Mohammad Mehedi Hasan alias Milon. Majnu Gazi is a resident of Daulatpur area of Khulna and Kamal Sheikh's house is in Betkashi area of Khulna. However, the police have not yet revealed the details of Mehedi Hasan's identity.
According to police sources, Majnu Gazi and Kamal Sheikh were first arrested from Rahra area. Later, based on their interrogation, Mehedi Hasan was arrested from Laskarpara area of Newtown, Kolkata. A case has been filed against them under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act.
After being kept in police custody for five days and questioned, they were produced before the Barrackpore Subdistrict Court on Sunday (May 18).
In his statement to the police, Kamal Sheikh said that he was the union-level member secretary of the Bangladesh Awami Jubo League. According to him, after the fall of the government in Bangladesh on August 5, political unrest arose across the country. In view of this, he illegally crossed the border into West Bengal, India on August 8 and went into hiding in different areas of Rahra police station.
The other two arrested persons also claimed to be active workers of the Awami League. The police said that the investigation into the matter is ongoing.
