EC gazettes Ishraq as mayor

The Election Commission (EC) has announced the name of BNP leader Engineer Ishraq Hossain as the new mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). The commission officially published the gazette on Sunday (April 27), which was done on the basis of the High Court's directive, EC sources said.

Earlier, on April 22, the Election Commission (EC) sent a letter to the Law Ministry asking whether Ishraq Hossain should be gazetted as the mayor of Dhaka South in view of the court's order. After receiving a positive response from the Law Ministry, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal held an emergency meeting with other election commissioners and high-ranking officials. The decision to publish the gazette was taken in that meeting that night.

As a result, there is no longer any legal obstacle in front of Engineer Ishraq Hossain to officially take charge as the new mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation.
