A new chapter in the political history of Bangladesh began on Tuesday (February 17). Tarique Rahman took oath as the country's 11th Prime Minister as BNP Chairman. President Md. Shahabuddin administered the oath to him in a colorful ceremony at the South Plaza of the National Assembly Building after 4 pm.
Earlier in the morning, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin administered the oath to the members of parliament elected in the 13th National Assembly. Usually, the cabinet oath-taking ceremony is held in the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban, but this time, as per the decision of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the ceremony was held in the open courtyard of the Parliament Building.
Incidentally, the BNP alliance led by Tarique Rahman won 212 seats in the February 12 election and achieved an absolute majority. This is the party's sixth return to state power in the country's history. This evening, the Cabinet Division will issue a notification allocating portfolios to the new ministers.
On the other hand, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has emerged as the main opposition party in parliament with 68 seats. Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has been elected as the party's parliamentary leader.
