The interim government has decided to change the name of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The new name will be ‘Special Intervention Force (SIF).’ Home Affairs Advisor Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury gave this information after the core committee meeting at the meeting room of the Home Ministry on Tuesday (February 3).
The Home Affairs Advisor said that the decision was taken due to various questions among the public regarding the name of the force. Along with the name change, the force’s uniform and activities will also change.
He also said that the morale and efficiency of the police have increased compared to before and there will be no problem in maintaining law and order in the upcoming elections. He also expressed hope that the next elections will be conducted very well even though it will take time to come out of the mob culture.
It was informed in the briefing that 7,731 firearms have been recovered so far through the army alone during the interim government.
It is worth noting that RAB was formed as a special force on March 26, 2004 and its operations began on April 14 of the same year. According to the Armed Police Ordinance 1979 (Amendment 2004), RAB was formed with members of various forces including the police, army, navy, and air force. RAB's headquarters is located in Uttara, Dhaka.
