The police have obstructed the teachers' procession marching towards the secretariat demanding nationalization of Ebtedayi madrasa education programs. At that time, the police threw sound grenades to disperse the procession.
The procession started from the National Press Club at around 2 pm on Wednesday (October 29) under the banner of the "Independent Ebtedayi Madrasa Teachers' Unity Movement Implementation Committee". The police stopped them as they were moving towards the secretariat. As the situation became heated, the police threw sound grenades to disperse the procession.
The procession was led by Shamsul Alam, convener of the Unity Movement Implementation Committee. He was accompanied by member secretary Mohammad Al Amin and president of the Bangladesh Independent Ebtedayi Madrasa Teachers' Association, Kazi Mokhlesur Rahman, and other top leaders of the organization.
The teachers said that they have been agitating for nationalization for a long time. They were forced to take to the streets as no specific decision was taken by the government. They said that if the educational programs of independent Ebtedayi madrasas at the primary level are nationalized, millions of teachers and staff families of the country will get relief.
There was no immediate comment from the police on the incident. However, additional police have been deployed in the Press Club area after the procession was dispersed, so that no new unrest is created.
