While the whole country was mourning a terrible plane crash in the Uttara area of the capital on Monday (July 21) afternoon, the story of a woman's unique bravery and sacrifice has emerged from this incident. She is Maherin Chowdhury, a teacher of the primary section of Milestone School and College.
That day, a Bangladesh Air Force training plane lost control and crashed into a building of the school. At that time, classes were going on there and many young children were present inside the building. Immediately after the accident, fire and thick smoke engulfed all around. The students started screaming and crying in panic.
Even in this horrific situation, teacher Maherin Chowdhury did not lose courage. Risking her own life, she brought at least 20 children out of the building safely one by one. Fire, smoke, panic—nothing could stop her. He considered his own life insignificant to save the lives of the children.
However, the last resort was not for himself. After the last child was taken out, a part of the building collapsed and he was trapped there and severely burned. He was taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in a critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries that night.
The news of his death was confirmed by the institute's resident surgeon, Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman. An army member who participated in the rescue operation said, "If it were not for the heroism of Mahereen Madam, it would have been a bigger tragedy." A parent said, crying with emotion, "My child is alive today only because of her."
So far, 20 people have been killed and 171 injured in the accident. More than 50 of them are undergoing treatment for burns. The government has declared a one-day state mourning on Tuesday, July 22, after this tragic incident and has formed a high-level investigation committee.
Teacher Mahereen Chowdhury's sacrifice will be forever remembered in the history of the country. She was not just a teacher, she was a true hero. Her courage, sense of responsibility and humanity will remain a beacon of inspiration for us.
Respect and love to Maherin Chowdhury. The nation will never forget your sacrifice.
