Chhatra League leaders and activists suddenly took out a sudden procession and set off two cocktail explosions in the Pocket Gate area adjacent to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall of Dhaka University. The incident occurred at around 6 am on Monday (June 16), which created panic among the students.
Eyewitnesses said that they were suddenly woken up by the slogans of 'Joy Bangla' and 'Sheikh Hasina' at around 5:50 am. A student of Sheikh Mujib Hall, who did not want to be named, said, "I went to the balcony and saw a group of about 15 people at Paribagh intersection. Later, they spread out in all directions and set off two cocktail explosions on the road in front of Pocket Gate."
The students alleged that although Chhatra League is currently considered a banned organization, it is deeply worrying that they are organizing and carrying out terrorist activities in this way.
Another DU student, Mohammad Ashraful Islam, said, “Two cocktail explosions took place at the pocket gate in the morning. On the same day, six more cocktails were recovered in front of the Kazi Motahar Hossain building. So where is the security? Today, the gate, if there is an attack tomorrow, then who will we go to?”
He also said, “All this is happening under the nose of the administration, but they don’t know anything—is this normal?”
The university administration has not yet commented on the incident. However, the students have demanded a speedy investigation, identification of the culprits and strict action.
