The BNP has been assured that the government is working to organize the national elections by December this year. Yesterday, Monday, after a meeting of BNP leaders with Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the party's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir gave this information.

"We have been informed that the government is working to organize the elections by December. We hope that the elections will be arranged quickly as per the expectations of the people and a roadmap will be announced."

"The meeting has been requested by the BNP to hold the national elections quickly. The matter is under consideration by the government. If the advisory council takes a decision on this matter, it will be announced."

Finance Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed, Legal Advisor Asif Nazrul and Industry Advisor Adilur Rahman were present at the meeting held at the State Guest House Jamuna. The BNP Secretary General was accompanied by Standing Committee members Salahuddin Ahmed and Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.

“We are preparing to hold elections by December. We seek the cooperation of political parties to ensure an acceptable election.”

A four-page written statement was presented by BNP at the meeting, outlining the party’s position on the tenure of the interim government and the current situation. They favored running the election process and reforms together and demanded the announcement of an early election roadmap.

Regarding reforms, the Press Secretary said that the National Consensus Building Commission will hold discussions with political parties from February 15. The recommendations of the six commissions will be discussed.

“Our statement is clear against the deterioration of the law and order situation in the country, the rise in commodity prices and the supporters of dictatorship. We are in favor of establishing an elected political government as soon as possible.”

Meanwhile, Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, advisor on local government elections, said that no final decision has been made on local government elections before the parliamentary elections. However, BNP wants national elections before local elections.

“Local government elections will not be held before national elections. We do not agree on this.” “We have warned the government not to create new problems like the past campaigns.”

BNP leaders have alleged that some advisors to the interim government are involved in the process of forming a new political party. This shows signs of using the administrative machinery, which is worrisome for democracy. However, they have said that they will welcome a new political party formed democratically.

Lastly, BNP has expressed its opinion in favor of forming a strong and effective government through early elections and expressed its opinion that reforms and elections can go together. The government has said that work is underway to organize elections by December.
