BNP and the Islamic Movement led by Charmonai Pir have agreed on 10-point demands for early, fair and acceptable elections after minimum reforms. This consensus was reached through a meeting between BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Islamic Movement Ameer Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim.
The meeting was held at the Islamic Movement office in Purana Paltan in the capital on Monday. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul and Vice Chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu reached the Islamic Movement office at around 12:15 pm. Islamic Movement Secretary General Yunus Ahmad and top party leaders were present at the meeting.
Background:
Although there have been ideological differences between Jamaat-e-Islami and Charmonai Pir's Islamic Movement for a long time, communication between them has increased recently. On January 21, Charmonai Pir and Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman's meeting created new discussions.
A section of the BNP criticized this connection as a 'meeting of forces that are anti-independence and allies of fascism'. In such a context, this meeting of the BNP Secretary General with Charmonai Pir has gained special importance in political circles.
Key points of consensus:
The issues on which the BNP and the Islamic Movement have agreed are:
Establishment of national unity: Formation of a democratic welfare state free from hegemony, expansionism and imperialism.
Anti-corruption measures: Exemplary punishment of corrupt, terrorists and money launderers.
Protection of human rights: Consensus on protecting all human rights, including the right to vote.
Fair elections: Acceptable elections as soon as possible after minimum reforms.
Price control: Necessary steps to normalize people's lives.
Anti-fascist unity: A joint initiative of Awami League anti-fascist forces.
Stop attacking each other: Anti-fascist forces will not create conflict among themselves.
Political unity: Unity to prevent forces like the Awami League from coming to power.
Protecting Islamic values: Avoiding anti-Islamic or anti-Sharia comments.
Administrative reform: Removing fascist collaborators in the administration.
Political analysis:
The meeting took place at a time when Charmonai Pir is playing an active role in forming an Islamic alliance and a new polarization has emerged in anti-Awami League politics. However, it is not yet possible to say whether this unity is only election-oriented or long-term.
