The Hindu's online report published yesterday discusses in detail the political life and current situation of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. This report by Kallol Bhattacharya highlights Khaleda Zia's political journey from past to present.
The report mentions how Khaleda Zia emerged on the political stage in 1981 after the assassination of President Ziaur Rahman and the subsequent political crisis. She was presented as a symbol of stability in Bangladeshi politics, especially when she led the BNP to victory in the 1991 elections and took office as the first female prime minister.
The report sheds light on the joint movement of Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia after the fall of the Ershad government in 1990 and the political rivalry that followed for two decades. During this time, Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia emerged as the two main forces in Bangladeshi politics.
The Hindu report highlighted the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government in August 2024 and the release of Khaleda Zia. It highlighted BNP's potential to return to power and Khaleda Zia's political wisdom in taking the right decisions at the right time.
Referring to Khaleda Zia's London trip and meeting with Tarique Rahman, the report said that BNP is now working on restructuring at the field level and determining its future strategy.
The 79-year-old Khaleda Zia, who has survived many adversities, is portrayed in The Hindu as a symbol of calm, alertness and determination in the current political turmoil in Bangladesh.
