Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has urged Malaysia to issue multiple-entry visas for Bangladeshi workers. He said that the workers will be able to return home easily through this visa. He made the call when Malaysian High Commissioner Mohammad Suhada Osman met the Chief Advisor at the Jamuna State Guest House in the capital Dhaka on Monday.
Dr. Yunus also mentioned that it is necessary to ensure the entry of 18,000 Bangladeshi workers who could not join work within the stipulated time frame in May last year.
Mohammad Suhada Osman said that a joint technical committee of officials from Malaysia and Bangladesh met in Kuala Lumpur on December 31 and another meeting is planned on the same subject on Tuesday.
In addition, recalling the meeting held with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Dhaka last October, Dr. Yunus expressed hope that Malaysia would expedite the process so that the next batch of Bangladeshi workers can go to work in Malaysia.
Congratulating Malaysia on assuming the ASEAN Chairmanship from 1 January 2025, Dr. Yunus called for Bangladesh to be supported in becoming an ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner and later a full member.
He also said that ASEAN’s support is needed in the upcoming international conference on resolving the Rohingya crisis based on UN Resolution 79/182. He also asked the new Malaysian High Commissioner to work on more Malaysian investment and relocation of factories in Bangladesh so that Bangladesh’s youth can be utilized.
Meanwhile, Senior Secretary for SDGs Lamia Morshed was also present at the event.
