Awal-led election commission resigned!

According to the constitution, the election commission (EC) led by Kazi Habibul Awal departed after only two and a half years, although the mandate was fixed for five years.
The Awal Commission officially announced the resignation at a press conference on Thursday (August 5) at 12 noon. Later Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal signed the resignation letter.
It is also known that the EC members will go to meet the President after the press conference.
Former Senior Secretary Kazi Habibul Awal was appointed as CEC on February 26, 2022. Besides, retired Brigadier General Ahsan Habib Khan, former District and Sessions Judge Begum Rashida Sultana, former Senior Secretary Md. Alamgir and former senior secretary Anichur Rahman.
A day after their appointment, they took oath before the then Chief Justice Hasan Faiz Siddiqui. The 12th National Parliament election was held under that commission. That election was boycotted by BNP and their like-minded political parties. Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League formed the government for the fourth consecutive time after the polls.
Since the last parliamentary elections, opposition political parties including BNP have been agitating for the resignation of the Election Commission along with the government. Awami League President Sheikh Hasina left the country after resigning from the post of Prime Minister in the students' uprising. After the fall of the government, the interim government removed the officials known as confidants of the Awami League in the administration. At that time, there was a demand to abolish the current election commission and form a new commission. Various programs have been held in this regard for several days.

After the interim government under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus, the Awal Commission tried to meet with the top level of the government to know their position and what to do, but failed. They are confirming that the EC will be reformed like other constitutional institutions after the change of political pot. They were mentally preparing for that for several days. While the other commissioners, including the CEC, are in office, the preparation for their exit takes precedence. At the last moment, they removed their essential documents and other materials.
