Between 90 and 100 people were killed and many more injured in an Israeli airstrike on a school in the Gaza Strip. The attack was carried out on Saturday morning.
The Gaza Civil Defense Authority confirmed the information to the BBC, saying the school is located in the Gaza city of Daraz. The school has been closed since the start of the Israeli military operation in Gaza on October 7. All those killed and injured are refugees.
Gaza Civil Defense Authority spokesman Mahmoud Bassal told AFP, "Israeli forces fired three rockets at the school in the early hours of Saturday morning. All those who were killed and injured had lost their homes in the last 10 months of war and took refuge in this school.”
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has already confirmed the incident. In a related notification, the IDF said that the school was being used by Hamas as its command center. That is why the air force has conducted an operation there.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas fighters launched an ambush on the territory of Israel. At least 1,200 people were killed in that attack. Along with that, 242 people were taken hostage by the fighters.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a military operation in Gaza that day to respond to the emergency and free the hostages, which is still ongoing. At least 39,700 people have been killed in Gaza so far and the number of injured has exceeded 100,000.
The IDF, however, said a week earlier that it was monitoring two schools in Gaza. Because they have information that these schools are being used as command centers by Hamas.
