Drone Attacks Reported Across Saudi Arabia, Including Oil-Rich Regions; Coalition Claims Interceptions

Drone and missile attacks have been reported in several areas of Saudi Arabia, including the country’s vital, oil-rich eastern region. The Saudi-led coalition claims to have intercepted some of these drones and missiles. Additionally, a drone was reportedly destroyed over the Medina region on Friday; however, Houthi rebels from Yemen have denied carrying out any attack in Medina.
According to a Reuters report, the coalition stated that it detected and destroyed a drone in Saudi Arabia’s eastern region, and subsequently shot down another drone aimed at the southern part of the country. Earlier, the coalition also reported intercepting a drone in the Medina region. The Houthis, for their part, claim that they did not conduct any operations on Saudi territory on Friday.
The eastern region of Saudi Arabia is a cornerstone of the nation’s economy, housing the bulk of its oil and gas reserves. It is also home to the headquarters of the state-owned oil company, Saudi Aramco. Consequently, these repeated attacks in the area have raised concerns regarding the security of energy infrastructure.
Earlier, in early October, reports emerged of significant damage following an attack on the Saudi Aramco headquarters. In recent weeks, there has been an uptick in attacks targeting various Saudi cities, airports, and energy facilities.
Meanwhile, Medina—one of the holiest cities in the Muslim world—attracts millions of Muslims from across the globe each year. The detection of a drone over such a significant location has sparked renewed discussion regarding the security situation in Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi-led coalition supports Yemen’s internationally recognized government, while the Houthi rebels control vast swathes of Yemeni territory, including the capital, Sanaa. Recent conflicts have further intensified tensions between the two sides. Notably, there are conflicting accounts from the two parties regarding responsibility for these incidents, including the alleged drone attack in Medina.
