Extreme tension and security alert have been issued in the area near the White House, the official residence of the US President. On Saturday local time, a man opened fire at security personnel, authorities said. He was later killed in a counter-attack.
According to the US Secret Service, the suspect walked towards a security checkpoint and suddenly started shooting. Security personnel took immediate countermeasures to bring the situation under control. The attacker was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, where doctors declared him dead.
A pedestrian was also shot in the incident. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether he was shot by the attacker or injured in the subsequent shooting by both sides. The relevant agency said that the matter is being investigated.
Although the US President was in the residence at the time of the incident, he was safe and unharmed, according to White House sources.
Meanwhile, journalists near the scene took shelter in a safe place after hearing the sound of gunfire. Several international media representatives reported hearing multiple rounds of gunfire. The area was briefly locked down for security reasons.
Security has been beefed up in the area following the incident. Law enforcement is continuing to investigate the motive behind the attack and the identity of the attacker.
