US-Iran counterclaims over Hormuz attack

Published: 01:59 5 May 2026
The US has claimed to have destroyed six Iranian fast gunboats in the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump said that six Iranian 'fast boats' were sunk in the US attack.
According to him, this step was taken to allow ships stranded in the Persian Gulf to safely navigate. He claimed that these boats were among the limited number of fast boats that Iran has, which are no longer operational.
The US military said that the attack was carried out using helicopters. However, this claim was directly denied by Iran's state media Tasnim News Agency.
The agency quoted a military source as saying that the US actually attacked two small cargo ships, where five civilians were claimed to have been killed.
The incident further increased tensions between the US and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz.
