Spirit Airlines closure announcement: Biggest blow to US aviation sector in 25 years

The US aviation sector is facing one of the biggest disasters in the history of the last 25 years. Spirit Airlines, known as a budget airline, is going to announce the closure of all its flights from 3 am (Eastern Time) on Saturday (May 2), sources have confirmed.
This is the first time that a major US airline has completely stopped its operations since Midway Airlines closed after the September 11 attacks in 2001. About 17,000 employees are at risk of losing their jobs due to this sudden decision of Spirit. At the same time, millions of passengers are at risk of extreme suffering.
According to the report, the company's plan to overcome the second round of bankruptcy has failed mainly due to the abnormal increase in fuel prices. Due to the impact of the Middle East situation, the price of jet fuel in the global market has almost doubled, making it difficult to survive financially.
In addition, last-minute talks with the administration of US President Donald Trump on a rescue fund fell through. A final agreement was not possible because a large part of the creditors did not agree to the government's terms. In this regard, Trump said that despite the best efforts to save jobs, no alternative was open because a satisfactory agreement was not reached. According to aviation analyst firm Sirim, Spirit had about 9,000 flights scheduled for the rest of May, with about 1.8 million seats under booking. As a result, an average of about 60,000 passengers per day could be directly affected by the decision.
