New conditions in Hormuz, toll to be paid in Iranian currency

A new tension has arisen between Iran and the United States over the Strait of Hormuz, which could have a major impact on world politics and the energy market. Deputy Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Haji Babaei, has announced that this strategic waterway is under full Iranian control and all ships passing through it will have to pay tolls in the Iranian currency 'rial'. In his words, the Strait of Hormuz is a 'red line' for Tehran, meaning that there will be no compromise on it.

Behind this tension is the recent diplomatic stalemate. High-level peace talks between the United States and Iran held in Islamabad ended without any agreement. Control of the Strait of Hormuz has become one of the biggest obstacles in the negotiations. It is worth noting that about 20% of the world's fuel oil and a large amount of LNG are transported through this channel, so control over it is very important for the global economy and energy security.

On the other hand, US President Donald Trump has claimed that the waterway will be reopened very soon. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that two of its military ships have already passed through the strait and that an operation to remove mines from the sea is underway. However, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps denied this claim and warned that strict action would be taken if any military ship tries to enter. Iran's state broadcaster IRIB said that civilian ships may be allowed to pass under certain conditions, but no military presence will be accepted.

If this situation continues, there is a risk of increasing oil prices in the world market, disruptions in international trade and further escalation of military tensions in the Middle East.
