The country's armed forces have declared allegiance to Mojtaba Khamenei after he was nominated as the new Supreme Leader of Iran. In a statement published on state media, the military supported him.
The statement referred to Mojtaba Khamenei as a 'just, wise, pious and prudent' leader. It also commented that the Assembly of Experts had shown intelligence by electing him as the Supreme Leader.
Earlier, Iran's influential military force, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), congratulated the new leader and declared its 'sincere and lifelong loyalty' to him.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with the sudden nomination of Mojtaba Khamenei as the Supreme Leader of Iran. US media Fox News presenter Brian Kilmeade claimed in a report that Trump told him in a private conversation that he was not at all satisfied with the decision.
According to analysts, the political situation in the Middle East could become more complicated due to this change in leadership in Iran and ongoing regional tensions.
