Ceasefire Strained as Israel Launches Airstrikes in Lebanon

Published: 01:14 28 February 2026
Regional tensions have intensified after Israel carried out new airstrikes in southern Lebanon, according to international media reports. As reported by Al Jazeera, the strikes targeted areas including Blat and Wadi Barghouti in the Iqlim al-Tuffah region. Analysts say the latest attacks effectively undermine the ceasefire agreement signed in November 2024 between Israel and the Lebanese armed group.
The Israeli military stated that the operation was aimed at military infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. However, local sources and humanitarian observers claim that repeated strikes in the area have also impacted civilians and public facilities, raising concerns about growing humanitarian consequences.
Earlier, on Thursday (February 26), a separate Israeli strike in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley reportedly killed one person and injured at least 29 others. According to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health and the National News Agency, the attack targeted the Kfar Dan area near Baalbek, resulting in the death of a 16-year-old Syrian teenager identified by local media as Hussein Mohsen al-Khalaf.
Despite the existing ceasefire, continued military operations along the border have heightened fears of renewed escalation. Observers warn that persistent hostilities could not only deepen tensions between the parties involved but also threaten broader regional stability in an already fragile Middle East landscape.
