Bangladesh's new Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been busy with diplomatic activities since taking oath. Om Birla, who is serving as the Speaker of the Indian Lok Sabha, paid a courtesy call on him today. During the meeting, he formally invited the Prime Minister to visit India.
Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riaz Hamidullah confirmed this information and said that both leaders expressed optimism about working together for the mutual interests and welfare of the people of the two countries. At the same time, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's greetings were also conveyed to Tarique Rahman.
After the oath-taking ceremony at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Tuesday (February 17), the Prime Minister held courtesy calls on high-level representatives of various countries. During this time, Maldives President Mohamed Mujibur Rahman and Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay also met the Prime Minister.
Strengthening bilateral relations, increasing regional cooperation and mutual development initiatives were discussed in the meetings. Sources say that these meetings have indicated that Bangladesh's diplomatic relations with South Asian countries are becoming more dynamic.
Analysts are seeing such high-level diplomatic contacts as a positive message after the swearing-in of the new government. It is believed that the invitation to visit India, in particular, could give a new dimension to the relations between the two countries.
