At least 40 people have been killed and hundreds injured in a massive explosion at a luxury bar in the Swiss town of Crans-Montana. The explosion occurred at the luxury “Constellation Bar” just after 1am local time, causing a fire and panic in the surrounding area.

“There were more than a hundred people inside the building. Many people were injured and the death toll could rise. We are investigating the cause of the incident,” said local police spokesman Gaëtan Lathion.

Local media outlet Blick reported that the death toll could still be in the dozens, citing doctors. However, regional daily Le Nouvelle-L’Est reported that the death toll could be around 40 and the injured could be around 100.

The Swiss government has set up a reception centre and helpline for families affected by the accident. Police and rescue workers are still investigating the cause of the incident.
