A major fire broke out while killing cockroaches in Osan, a city in northern South Korea. One woman died and eight others were sickened by smoke inhalation. Police said a woman in her 20s will be charged with arson and negligent homicide in connection with the fire.

According to local media reports, the woman sprayed flammable material in her apartment to kill cockroaches and set it on fire with a lighter. She told police that she had killed cockroaches in the same way several times before. However, the fire broke out while doing the same thing on Monday and spread throughout the entire apartment in an instant.

After the fire broke out, residents of the building started running for their lives. A Chinese couple living on the fifth floor threw their two-month-old baby to a neighbor in the next building. Although the baby was rescued safely, the woman fell down from the window and was seriously injured. Later, she was taken to the hospital where doctors declared her dead. Her husband managed to get to the next building by holding onto the window ledge.

Police said the couple was probably unable to get down the stairs due to thick smoke. Later, the accident occurred while trying to escape through the window.

The building has shops on the first floor and a total of 32 apartments from the second to the fifth floor. After the fire broke out, firefighters brought the fire under control after several hours of effort. Eight more people are said to have fallen ill due to the smoke and are hospitalized.

Recently, the trend of killing cockroaches and other insects using flammable substances or blowtorches has increased on social media. Many people make flammable substances at home and light them on fire to kill the insects. But this dangerous method has repeatedly led to fires.

In 2018, a man in Australia set fire to his kitchen while trying to kill cockroaches using a domestic flamethrower. According to experts, such methods are very risky and pose a risk of loss of life or property.

Police said the woman killed in the accident in Osan was a Chinese national. The incident is under investigation and an arrest warrant will be issued soon for the woman accused.
