The main influence behind the resignation of Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was the anti-corruption movement in public life. Nepali girl and Bollywood actress Manisha Koirala has come forward to support this movement.
Manisha expressed sympathy for the victims on social media, saying that the movement is not just against the internet shutdown, but also a fight against corruption in the youth. She shared a picture of a bloody shoe and wrote, “Today is a black day for Nepal. The voice and sense of justice of the people have been suppressed through bullets.”
Later, she posted a picture of her grandfather, Nepal’s first elected Prime Minister BP Koirala, and said, “Today, students are standing against corruption and for freedom. Democracy is indivisible; no fight can be neglected if you want democracy at home.”
The movement in Nepal intensified when the government banned 26 major social media platforms. At least 20 people were killed in the violence. Students also attacked the homes of several ministers and Oli’s residence. President Ram Chandra Poudel eventually accepted Oli's resignation and the social media ban was lifted.
In addition to Manisha's grandfather BP Koirala, her elder brother MP Koirala and younger brother GP Koirala were also Prime Ministers of Nepal. As a result, the Koirala family is deeply connected to Nepal's political history.
