A gunman has attacked the Fort Stewart military base in the US state of Georgia. An emergency lockdown has been declared on the base after the attack. There were reports of a possible 'casualty' at the time of the incident, although it has not yet been confirmed whether anyone was killed or injured.

The base is located about 386 kilometers from the city of Atlanta. Video of military personnel being evacuated from the scene immediately after the incident spread on social media. Local media reported that a precautionary lockdown has also been implemented at nearby schools.

Lieutenant Colonel Angel Tomko, who is in charge of the base, told the AP news agency, "We are still assessing the situation and can confirm the existence of an active shooter."

The FBI's Atlanta office said it was aware of the incident and that the situation is still active.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp wrote on social media,

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured, their families, and those who have stepped forward to serve. We ask all of Georgia to join us in prayer.”

Meanwhile, Congressman Buddy Carter, who represents the Fort Stewart area, said, “We are monitoring the situation. Please join us in praying for the injured, their families, and the brave law enforcement officers who are working to protect our community.”
