An important conference on the border between Bangladesh and India is starting in the Indian capital New Delhi on Monday (February 17). Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India's Border Security Force (BSF) will participate in the conference.
Important issues such as the construction of a fence by India on the border and the recent attacks on civilians against the BSF will be discussed. The Indian side confirmed the matter of the conference on Friday (February 14) through an official statement.
Indian media NDTV reported that the border conference will be held at the Indian BSF headquarters from February 17-20. This will be the first top-level meeting between the border forces of the two countries, which is being held after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5 last year.
The BGB delegation will be led by Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui and the BSF will be led by BSF Director General (DG) Daljit Singh Chowdhury. The BSF said in a statement that the conference is being organized to discuss border-related issues and for better coordination between the two forces.
Besides, India shares a 4,096-km border with Bangladesh across five states, including 2,217 km with West Bengal, 856 km with Tripura, 443 km with Meghalaya, 262 km with Assam and 318 km with Mizoram.
After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government last year, Bangladesh had expressed its concerns to the Indian High Commissioner about the construction of the fence and the activities of the BSF along the border. However, India said that all protocols were being followed during the construction of the fence.
