US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he wants Russia to be brought back to the G7, the world's seven developed countries. He said that it was a mistake to expel Moscow from the alliance after Ukraine's annexation of Crimea in 2014.
Previously, Russia was a member of the G8, but was expelled after the annexation of Crimea. Trump told a press conference at the White House, "I think it was a mistake to exclude them. It's not just about liking Russia or not, it's the G8."
He also said, "I think Putin would like to come back. If he has the opportunity to sit at the negotiating table with Russia, it would be more effective."
In addition, Canada is in charge of the G7 presidency this year, but there has been no response to Trump's comments yet.
