Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US President Donald Trump on Thursday. According to an AFP report, Trump has proposed to sell fighter jets to India. As part of this proposal, the United States is planning to sell F-35 fighter jets to India, which will include India in an important NATO club in the future.

Modi announced in this meeting that a lucrative trade deal between the two countries will be signed soon. He particularly emphasized oil and gas, saying that cooperation with China through a new trade deal and reducing tariffs will make it possible to prevent a global trade war.

Trump said during the meeting at the White House, “We are going to buy a lot of oil and gas from India, and it will establish a great trade relationship between our two countries.” Modi’s delegation also made some promises to Trump before this meeting about increasing purchases of liquefied natural gas (LNG), warships and jet engines.

Also, Indian officials are hopeful that this meeting can lead to agreements on US agricultural exports and nuclear energy investment.

The Trump administration is looking to reduce the US trade deficit by increasing cooperation in the trade, defense and energy sectors. Meanwhile, Trump has sought more cooperation from India in preventing illegal immigration.

Modi said, “What I have learned from President Trump is that he puts national interest first, and I have put India’s national interest first.” Meanwhile, Indian officials are hoping that a major trade deal will be announced soon in 2025.
