Yesterday, US President Donald Trump said in an interview with Fox News that Ukraine could one day be part of Russia. According to Trump, who has long campaigned for a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war, "They may make a deal, they may not. If they want to, Ukraine can be part of Russia."
Later this week, Trump's Vice President J.D. Vance will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Munich Security Conference, which could be a key step in accelerating an end to the war. In this regard, Vance and Zelensky's spokesman, Sergey Nikiforov, have confirmed that they will meet each other on February 17.
Trump also said that his special envoy Keith Kellogg is preparing a plan to visit Ukraine on February 20. Details of the proposal have not yet been released. However, he said he has some expectations in return for the financial aid given to Ukraine, especially the potential for economic gains from Kiev's rare minerals.
Ukraine, however, is cautious on this issue. President Zelensky has said he will demand strong security guarantees from the United States before any agreement with Russia. "An effective security guarantee for Ukraine is very important, not only for Ukraine, but for the entire free world," he said.
In this situation, it is still unclear how successful Trump's mediation will be. So far, there has been no sign of direct talks between Ukraine and Russia.
