Former US President Donald Trump has announced sanctions against the South American country of Colombia. He announced this measure because it has not taken back deported migrants. Republican leader Trump said that a 25 percent tariff will be imposed on Colombian products immediately. In addition, this tariff will be increased to 50 percent within a week.
The BBC reported that when a US military plane carrying deported migrants tried to land in Colombia, the country's President Gustavo Petro blocked it. Trump announced this tough measure in response.
Trump wrote on his social media account Truth Social, "Colombia has a legal responsibility to take back the criminals they pushed into the United States. We will not allow them to fail in this responsibility." Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced a 25 percent tariff on US products as a countermeasure.
It is worth noting that Colombia received 475 US flights carrying migrants from 2020 to 2024. However, this recent refusal has led to new tensions in diplomatic relations between the two countries.
