Prime Minister Narendra Modi has claimed that Bangladesh’s victory on December 16, 1971, after a bloody nine-month war against the Pakistani occupation forces, is ‘India’s historic victory’. On December 16, on the occasion of Bangladesh’s great Victory Day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made this claim in a post on his verified Facebook page.
Narendra Modi’s post read, ‘Today, on Victory Day, we pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the brave soldiers who contributed to India’s historic victory in 1971. Their selfless dedication and unwavering resolve have saved our nation and brought us glory. This day is a tribute to their extraordinary heroism and their indomitable spirit. Their sacrifice will forever inspire the next generation and will be deeply embedded in the history of our nation.’
In response to Narendra Modi’s status, Hasnat Abdullah, convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, wrote on his Facebook ID, ‘This is the Liberation War of Bangladesh. This war was fought for Bangladesh's independence against Pakistan. But Modi claims that it is only India's war and their achievement. The existence of Bangladesh is ignored in their statement.'
Hasnat wrote, 'When India claims this independence as its own achievement, I see it as a direct threat to the independence, sovereignty, and integrity of Bangladesh. It is inevitable that we continue to fight against this threat from India. We must continue this fight.'
