Amazon workers strike around the world

Published: 01:53 3 December 2024
Amazon workers are striking in different parts of the world to mark Black Friday. The labor rights organization UNI Global Union has called their protest movement ‘Make Amazon Pay’.
According to reports by various international media outlets including The Guardian, protests against Amazon are taking place in more than 20 countries in addition to the strike. The allegations include worker oppression, environmental pollution and threats to democracy. The protesters have demanded that Amazon increase wages, improve working conditions and allow the formation of trade unions.
Meanwhile, Amazon has called the protesters ‘propaganda’ in a statement. They have demanded that their working environment be modern and safe. The company said it has created more than 1.5 million jobs worldwide. However, according to reports, 50 percent of serious warehouse accidents in the United States in 2022 occurred at Amazon’s workplaces.
The ‘Make Amazon Pay’ movement began in 2020. The aim is to force Amazon to be more accountable to its employees, the environment and society. UNI Global Union and Progressive International are leading the movement. More than 30 trade unions, environmental organisations and civil society groups are taking part in the strike.
