At least 11 people have been killed and at least 9 people are still missing due to heavy rains and resulting flash floods in the three southern provinces of the North African country of Morocco. These provinces are Tata, Tijani and Erashidia.

In a press conference on Sunday, Moroccan Interior Minister Rashid Khalfi said, "The rainfall that has occurred in the country for the last two days is unusual. The last two days have seen more rain than Morocco receives in a normal year."

17 districts of the three southern provinces were the worst affected by the rains. All those killed and still missing are residents of these 17 districts. A foreign national is also among the dead.

At least 40 houses and 93 roads were destroyed due to floods. Apart from this, electricity, drinking water supply and telecommunication system of these 17 districts have also been damaged.

The southern region of Morocco has suffered from drought for 6 consecutive years. Then this rain starts from Friday. "I haven't seen this much rain in 15 years," local resident Omar Gana told AFP.
