Vegetable prices hit 'century', green chillies cost Tk 280 per kg

The impact of several days of heavy rains has started to be felt in the capital's green markets. Due to reduced supply, the prices of almost all types of vegetables have crossed Tk 100 per kg in a week. Currently, except for a few vegetables, most products in the market are being sold between Tk 100 and 160. And green chillies, one of the essential household items, are being sold at Tk 280 per kg.
On Friday (July 24), such high prices were seen while visiting various green markets including Malibagh, Rampura and Shantinagar in the capital.
Current market prices:
Green chillies: 280 taka per kg (300 taka depending on the location)
Eggplant (round and long): 120 to 160 taka per kg
Tomatoes and cucumbers: 130 to 160 taka per kg
Bitter gourd, bitter gourd and kankrol: 120 taka per kg
Kachur leaves and gourds (per piece): 100 taka
Patal, chichinga and dhendras: 80 taka per kg
Papaya: 40 taka per kg (the only affordable vegetable)
Buyers and sellers' statements
Buyers who came to the market expressed strong anger and dissatisfaction over the abnormal prices of vegetables. They complained that due to the lack of administrative supervision or market monitoring, sellers are raising prices as they wish. It has become impossible for ordinary people to buy vegetables at such prices.
On the other hand, traders at Shantinagar Market said that the rains are disrupting the transport of vegetables from different parts of the country and the supply in the wholesale market is low as fields have been damaged in many places. They indicated that the prices of vegetables are unlikely to come down until the weather normalizes.
