The government has made changes to the post of Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank. The remaining term of Md. Zakir Hossain Chowdhury's contractual appointment has been cancelled. At the same time, Bangladesh Bank Executive Director Md. Anisur Rahman has been appointed as the new Deputy Governor.
On Monday, the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance issued two separate notifications in this regard. According to the notification, the order to cancel Zakir Hossain Chowdhury's appointment will be effective immediately.
Zakir Hossain Chowdhury was appointed as the Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank on September 8, 2024 for a period of three years. As such, he was supposed to serve until September 2027. However, the government cancelled the remaining part of his contract before the end of the term.
On the other hand, Md. Anisur Rahman has been appointed on a contractual basis for three years from the date of joining. He has been given this responsibility on the condition that he voluntarily retires from his current position and suspends his post-retirement leave.
The notification states that other terms and conditions of the new appointment will be determined through a contract. This order, issued in the public interest, will also come into effect immediately.
