The court has granted bail to the popular Dhaka film heroine Nusrat Faria, who was arrested in an attempted murder case filed at the capital's Bhatara Police Station.
On Tuesday (May 20), Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court Judge Mostafizur Rahman granted the bail after considering the application of the accused's lawyer. Nusrat Faria's lawyer Barrister Mohammad Iftekhar Hossain confirmed the matter.
Earlier, Nusrat Faria was arrested from the immigration check post at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on May 18 while going to Thailand. A case and warrant were issued against her on charges of attempted murder in an incident centered on the July uprising.
When she was produced in court the next Monday, the judge ordered her to be sent to jail. She was sent to Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur under police guard at around 2:30 pm.
Nusrat Faria started her journey in the media as a radio jockey. She then gained popularity by working as a presenter and in plays. She made her big screen debut in 2015 with the Bangladesh-India joint production film 'Aashiqui'. Since then, she has acted in about 20 films in Dhallywood and Tollywood. Her performance in the film 'Gene-3', which was recently released on Eid, was praised.
However, her arrest and involvement in the case has created controversy in various quarters. The National Citizens Party (NCP) alleged in a statement that it is turning the trial process into a farce. The statement also said that former President Abdul Hamid, the main accused in the same incident, has left the country without any hindrance. Instead of bringing those involved in the July coup and genocide to justice, the path to mass justice is being blocked by filing cases for show.
Questions have now been raised in the public mind about the true purpose and judicial process of this case.
