The police have arrested Aminul Islam Jamil (57), the Imam of Baitus Salam Jame Mosque in Chakoi Paschimpara, Narail Sadar Upazila, on charges of sexually harassing children in the maktab. He is the son of Abul Kasem from the nearby Rukhali village and had been leading the prayer at the mosque for about two years. He was sent to jail by a court on Saturday (May 9) morning.
According to local sources, locals arrested him from Chakoi Bazar area on Friday afternoon, beat him up and handed him over to the police. Later that night, when the incident spread on social media, there was a huge stir in the area.
The father of one of the victims in the incident has filed a case with Narail Sadar Police Station. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station Ajay Kumar Kundu confirmed the matter.
The victim's family and locals alleged that Aminul Islam Jamil used to teach Arabic to children on the balcony of the mosque after Fajr prayers. During this time, he would sexually abuse the children in various ways by tempting them with chocolates.
The father of a child said that on May 5, after the other students had left, his daughter was called inside the maktab on the pretext of giving her chocolates and sexually abused. Later, when the child told the family about the matter, similar allegations were confirmed by other children.
